Get Rid of a Baby's Cough

Get Rid of a Baby's Cough - Take your child into a small bathroom with you for a steam treatment. While sitting somewhere comfortable with your child, turn on the hot water from a bathtub or faucet to create steam in the bathroom. Stay in the room for several minutes. Because your child may be experiencing a cough due to allergies or mucus build up in the throat due to a cold, a vapor or steam treatment can loosen the mucus and stop the child from coughing.

Buy a small humidifier for the child's bedroom. A humidifier will moisten the air in any small room in which it is located. Allow the humidifier to run throughout the night while the child is sleeping. If the air is still dry or dusty in your home, you may want to use the humidifier for several days in any room where your child sleeps or plays.

Buy a vapor rub lotion and apply the lotion to your child's chest. A cough that is the result of a minor cold or dry air may be eased with the moistening vapors of any reputable vapor rub lotion.

Ask your local pharmacist for recommendations for non cold medicine treatments for the cough. Pharmacists have good knowledge for over-the-counter treatments for common coughs, especially for children.

If, however, your child has been coughing constantly for more than a few days, or if in addition to the coughing the child has a fever, rapid breathing, or any chronic illnesses, it is important to immediately seek medical advice and attention from a doctor to rule out other illnesses and garner treatment.

As any parent knows, a coughing child can be difficult to treat, especially as the coughing might be a simple reflex or a symptom of a more serious condition. But not all coughing is necessarily bad, nor should you always try to stop your child from coughing. According to Kids Health, "Coughs are one of the most common symptoms of childhood illness. Although a cough can sound awful, it's not usually a sign of a serious condition. In fact, coughing is a healthy and important reflex that helps protect the airways in the throat and chest." If your child has recently begun to cough and is coughing persistently, you can try various remedies to ease or stop the baby's coughing, before contacting your child's doctor. - by eHow
