Teach a Baby to Crawl

Teach a Baby to Crawl - Give your baby time on her stomach. Getting tummy time each day is a way to help your baby to develop stronger muscles in her back. This will eventually allow her to use those muscles to pull up and hold her knees under her.

Create an inviting space on the floor. Lay out a comfortable blanket and place the baby on his stomach in the center of it. Place toys around him to keep him occupied and teach him how to reach out his arms for things from this position. He will soon start to get into the airplane position with his arms and legs out straight. This is one of the stages along the way to learning to crawl.

Place the baby's toys farther and farther away from her. She will have to reach a little more each time to get them. This will further strengthen some of the muscles she will need to use to crawl.

Start putting his toys at the corners of the blanket. He will not be able to reach the toys by stretching the way he had been. He will have learned that it is possible to get the toys if he tries hard to do so. He will try to move himself far enough to reach the toys. For many babies, this is the first time they crawl.

Congratulate the baby for crawling. This will encourage more crawling. Don't make loud, startling noises the first time she crawls, though, or you will make her nervous.

Babies generally learn to crawl in their own time, but a baby who is trying to become mobile and becoming frustrated can benefit from some help. A baby can learn how to crawl more quickly if a parent or caregiver takes a part of each day to put the baby in the proper position to learn to crawl. - by eHow
