Encourage Good Eating Habits in a Baby

Encourage Good Eating Habits in a Baby - Avoid white bread. Eating whole wheat bread is a great habit to encourage in your baby. A child who grows up eating whole grains will be more likely to choose whole grain bread over white. Buy whole grain products and bake with whole grain flours at home.

Hold off on sweets. The longer that you can avoid giving your baby sweets, the more likely it is that she will develop a preference for tart and savory flavors. It is not necessary to sweeten cereals or plain yogurt with fruits. Babies who are not used to sweets will happily eat these foods plain. In fact, they may grow to prefer them that way. Give your baby fruits as a dessert option. For the actual meal, offer her vegetables.

Give your baby plain milk. Your doctor will give you permission to give your baby cow's milk when she is about 1 year old. Avoid giving her chocolate milk, it is full of excess sugar. Give your baby plain milk to allow her to get used to, and learn to like, the flavor.

Do not use salt. Babies do not need extra salt in their foods. The salt found naturally in fruits and vegetables is plenty. Do not give her salty snacks. This may encourage an unhealthy preference for salty foods.

Serve your baby a variety of foods. Giving your baby different foods will expose her to different flavors. This will encourage her desire to try new foods and make it less likely that she will become a picky eater. Serving your baby a variety of foods is also a good way to be sure that she gets all of the vitamins and minerals that she needs.

Some people believe that children naturally prefer sweets and junk food. However, this is not true. Babies develop preferences as food is introduced to them. What your child prefers and the foods she will choose as she gets older, are influenced by the foods that you feed her now. If you encourage your baby to eat healthy, it is more likely that she will choose healthy options as she gets older. Below are some tips for encouraging healthy eating habits in your baby. - by eHow
