Treat Dry Skin on Babies

Treat Dry Skin on Babies - Place a humidifier or vaporizer in the room where your baby sleeps. Dry air can cause dry skin, so control the moisture in the place where your baby spends the most time. Also, make sure that the room temperature is not too cold or too hot.

Apply a few drops of baby oil to a lukewarm bath. A baby does not get dirty very easily, so only bathe him once every three to five days for 10 minutes at a time. Only use soap every other time you bathe your baby and when you do, use a chemical-free, mild soap approved for use on a baby. Gently massage your baby's skin with a light hand and do not scrub. You can increase the amount of baths given once your baby is able to move and crawl around.

Pat your baby dry with a soft towel after the bath. You do not need to rub. After your baby is dried off, apply a chemical- and perfume-free lotion to his skin. Cetaphil is an excellent choice, as is Johnson & Johnson's Baby cream, A&D ointment or Vaseline.

Wash your baby's clothes separately and do not use laundry soap or fabric softeners when doing so. These detergents can irritate your baby's skin. Instead, use tea-tree oil or baking soda as a substitute.

Dress your baby in breathable apparel, such as cotton. Avoid harsh fabrics like wool or nylon and make sure that the clothing is not tight. Also, change your baby's diaper immediately after it has become soiled. The wetness can cause chaffing, which leads to dry skin.

Although dry skin is relatively harmless, it can sometimes be uncomfortable for your baby and can lead to more serious skin diseases if not treated. Unfortunately, a baby's skin tends to get dry or flaky because it is new and more delicate. However, there are plenty of ways to remedy dry skin on your infant. - by eHow
