Nurse a Baby

Nurse a Baby - Sit in a comfortable chair. A chair with a high back and arm rests can be comfortable for breastfeeding.

Cradle your baby in the nook of your arm. Turn your baby's body completely facing you so that you are belly to belly and align his mouth with your nipple. Gently pull your baby close to you.

Tickle your baby's lips with your nipple. Gently express milk on your baby's lips. This can encourage your baby to open his mouth wide.

Place your nipple into the back of your baby's mouth. It should rest on top of his tongue. The nipple should be far back into your baby's mouth. Your baby's lips should be turned out.

Sit quietly or speak in a soothing voice while your baby is feeding. Never speak harshly or get lost in a conversation with someone during this activity. Use this time to focus on your baby for the most effective breastfeeding.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of life. Breastfed babies are less likely to develop ear infections and are generally healthier. Breastfed babies are also less likely to develop allergies. Breast milk meets the nutritional needs of babies perfectly. It has protective antibodies that help keep your baby healthy. If you want to breastfeed your baby, it can be both possible and practical. - by eHow
