Instructions on Change a Baby's Diaper

Instructions on Change a Baby's Diaper - Begin by washing and drying your hands. Prepare a comfortable area to change your baby by setting up a changing table or placing a changing cloth over a warm, soft surface.

Prepare your supplies. Be sure that everything you will need, including diapers, fasteners, wipes, washcloths and ointment, is within reach before placing your baby on a changing table. It is also a good idea to have a diaper pail ready.

Unfasten the dirty diaper. As you remove it, fold it in half, using the clean front area to wipe away as much poop as possible. If you are changing a boy, place a clean cloth or diaper over his genitals, since exposure to air tends to cause boys to urinate. Grasp your baby by the ankles gently and lift his bottom to avoid contaminating the clean area.

Wipe the baby's front area, including genitals, with a wipe or a damp washcloth. Be sure to wipe girls from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria that may cause an infection. Wipe both legs and the buttocks, and be sure to clean the folds between the thighs and buttocks.

Dispose of the dirty diaper in the nearby pail. Apply any ointment or cream to heal or prevent diaper rash and place the back side of the clean diaper under the baby's buttocks. Pull the front side of the diaper through the baby's legs and position the fasteners at the waist line. For boys, point the penis down to avoid urine spilling out the front of the diaper.

The basics of changing a baby's diaper are the same whether you are using cloth diapers with pins, pre-folded cloth diapers with snaps or fasteners, or disposable diapers. Preparing for the diaper change, getting your supplies ready and having everything that you will need within reach before laying your baby on the changing table is key to a hassle-free diaper change. In addition, there are certain techniques and tips that will save you time and effort when changing a baby's diaper. - by eHow
