Determine if Your Baby has a Diaper Rash or Yeast Skin Condition - If your baby has a rash that is red and is either patchy or covers a solid area around the genitalia it is more than likely a diaper rash. You may notice that your baby's rash is flat, red, irritated skin. If you do not treat it, blisters can form after several days. Apply a white zinc oxide cream, the original A&D ointment, or petroleum jelly liberally over the rash. This helps clear up the rash while keeping the chemicals from urine and feces off the infected skin.
If your baby has recently been treated for an infection using antibiotics and has a rash around the genitalia or a larger area including your baby's bottom, there is a very good chance your baby's diaper rash is caused by yeast and not the chemicals in urine usually associated with a common diaper rash.
Determine if Your Baby has a Diaper Rash or Yeast Skin Condition
Look at your baby's rash. If you see that the rash is a red, raised, patchy area with sharp borders, mostly over the genitalia, but with spots sprinkled around the diaper area, there is a high probability that your baby has a 'yeast; rash.
While on the antibiotic make a paste from the Acidophilus by mixing with water or breastmilk. Rub the paste in your baby's mouth once a day, or put 1 teaspoon of the powder in formula once a day if bottlefeeding. This will decrease the chances of your baby getting a 'yeast' rash as the yeast exits the body through the urine and stool.
If any rash or rash like condition persists or gets worse after treatment conact your pediatrician or family physician if you do not have a pediatrician.
All babies get a diaper rash occasionally, some worse than others and with more frequency. But sometimes what you might think is a diaper rash can sometimes be something more. A yeast infection and other similar conditions can be mistaken for a diaper rash, but a yeast infection must be treated differently. - by eHow
