Make Babies Smart

Make Babies Smart - To make babies smart, present a lot of lights, colors, and sound.
Babies respond positively to a variety of visual stimulation. Using their senses helps to establish critical connections.

Give babies a lot of touch.
Every time you touch your babies hand, nerve impulses travel to your babies brain and make a connection. Picking your baby up sends signals, too. Everything that happens to your baby via sound, touch, etc. send signals that help to make critical connections. Touch is also important to discovery. Babies and young children learn through discovery. The next time they play in the dog food or pick something up, use it as a learning opportunity. You may not want them to touch something breakable but replace those things with a variety of things placed within reach that they can safely touch and explore. Exploration will help to make them smart.

Talk to your child.
Use a lot of language. When they begin to talk, repeat back and expand on what they are saying. When they begin to associate "baba" with bottle, don't nod and say "baba" back to them. Instead, say "yes, you want your bottle? Here it is. Here is your bottle for you to drink." Expanding on their communication will also help to make connections and will help to increase early language skills.

Give your baby a lot of physical movement.
Did you know that physical exercise is linked in research to the development of reading and math skills? Balance, coordination, climbing, swinging, etc, are critical parts of growing up and help children to form critical connections. For infants, use a mobile or other things that help support physical exercise through reaching, grabbing, pulling, etc. As they get older, give them plenty of play equipment that supports physical activity.

Know the critical periods for learning of different skills.
All babies go through period of development that support different skills. The link in the "resources" section below will give the "mental milestones" that babies go through on their way to being smart. Use this as a resource to help guide the activities that you present your baby with.

There are strategies to make babies smart. All babies are born with billions of brain cells (part of nature) and connections between those cells. However, their experiences (nurture) help to determine if those cells and connections are fine tuned or eliminated. The most critical period for nurturing brain development is before the age of three. During that period there are many steps we can take to make babies smart. - by eHow
