Handle a Baby - When holding a new baby, always make sure to support his neck. Keep one hand behind his head at all times. If the baby's head is bobbing backwards, you are not supporting the baby's neck.
Passing a baby from one person to another can be difficult. Try this technique: Put one hand under the baby's bottom and the other behind the neck and head. Keep the baby as close to you as possible while the other person slides their hands under yours, basically taking your place holding the baby. This way the baby gets full head and neck support and feels secure during the transaction.
Handle a Baby
Picking a baby up from a flat surface can be handled in the same way. Simply slip one hand underneath the baby's head, neck and shoulders. Put your other hand under her bottom. Lift the baby as close to your body as possible, just in case she wiggles. Lay the baby down with your hands in the same positions. Remember to always lay a baby on her back to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
An even more difficult feat is putting clothing on a new baby. Make sure to keep a hand behind the baby's head and neck at all times and dress him with your other hand while he is being held in sitting position. It may be helpful to sit on a baby blanket with your legs crossed and the baby supported in the crook of your leg so that you can use two hands to dress her. Onesies (one piece pajamas) can be gently slipped under the baby while she is laying down. Each arm and leg can be inserted into the onesie one at a time without a lot of struggle.
Since a baby's brain is not fully developed and very easily damaged, never shake a baby. Gentle, soft movements are the only ones that you should make with a baby in your arms.
