Get an 8-Month-Old Baby to Sleep on His Own

Get an 8-Month-Old Baby to Sleep on His Own - Keep your baby active throughout the day. One reason that babies often have trouble sleeping is because they still have excess energy left in them. To avoid this, keep your baby active throughout the day by talking and playing with her as much as possible. The day-long stimulation will use up your baby's energy and help her sleep better at night.

Regulate naps. Daytime naps are important for babies, but if you allow your baby to sleep too long during the day, he won't need any sleep when the night comes. To avoid this, do not allow your baby to nap for large chunks of time during the day.

Create a consistent bedtime routine. Creating a bedtime routine will help your child get into the rhythm of sleeping on her own. You can choose to create a routine that involves bathing, singing, reading or a variety of other activities right before bedtime. Your baby will then associate these activities with sleep and will find it easier to sleep the next time you try to put her to bed.

Let your baby find a comfort zone. Many babies have trouble getting comfortable prior to going to bed. To help get your baby comfortable, you can use a pacifier and also quietly talk to him while you rub his back. You should also expect some wiggling and noises while your baby is trying to fall asleep. This is natural and you should let him use this wiggling to settle down.

Avoid awakening your baby. If you happen to get up in the middle of the night or need to tend to your baby at night, avoid turning on any bright lights or making any loud noises that will get your child completely alert. Using dim lighting and soft voices will keep your baby from waking up entirely and make it easier for her to stay asleep or get back to sleep.
