Put Your Baby Straight to Sleep

Put Your Baby Straight to Sleep - Create a peaceful daytime environment. Hold your baby often and limit noise and activity around your baby, especially in the hours before she goes to sleep. Doing so will encourage your baby to remain calm and relaxed as bedtime approaches. Resist engaging in playtime with your baby around these times to keep her calm.

Create consistent sleeping patterns for your baby, which means sticking to a strict bedtime routine. Do not spend too much time comforting your baby if he awakens in the middle of the night, as doing so will encourage him to stay awake longer. Allow your baby to fall asleep on his own if he awakens.

Swing your baby to sleep. Place your baby in a gentle swing or baby sling and push or walk with her gently to induce sleep. This may require 30 minutes or longer, but doing so may encourage sleep to take over. Once she has fallen asleep, gently lay her down in her crib for a good night's rest.

Putting a baby to sleep is perhaps one of the greatest daily challenges a parent faces. Babies often cry for a period of time before sleeping. They may even scream or become extremely agitated at bedtime. While there is no guaranteed method of getting a baby to sleep right away, there are techniques that may assist in the process once the baby has reached 3 to 6 months of age. - by eHow
