Get Your Baby to Take a Nap (For babies 4 months and older) - Get your baby some fresh air. Going for a long walk with the baby stroller is often the best trick to get an infant to sleep. Make sure the stroller is positioned so the baby does not face you, as this may may be too exciting for the baby and keep him awake.
Get your baby some exercise. A baby jumper is a wonderful way to get your child some physical activity that may exhaust her so she will fall asleep. If you don't have a baby jumper, just help the baby jump up and down with your hands.

Fill his tummy, because a hungry baby may not sleep. Nursing helps your baby sleep; if you're not nursing, hold your baby close and give him a warm bottle. You may also use cereal mixed with her favorite fruit.
Sing your baby to sleep. Rock the baby and sing your favorite songs. It doesn't have to be a lullaby song. Any song will do but try not to get them too excited or agitated; a Marilyn Manson song is probably not a good choice.
Give your baby a massage or tummy rub. Both are excellent ways to relax a tense baby. Use a little lotion or oil. It's good for both of you to have a little skin-on-skin contact.
If you are having trouble getting your infant to take a nap, some of these tips may help. Of course, not all tricks work for all babies, so you may need to try a few to find the ones that will help your baby fall asleep. - by eHow
