Get Treatment for a Baby's Flat Head

Get Treatment for a Baby's Flat Head - Wait until your baby is six weeks old before seeking treatment. Many babies are born with misshapen heads; however, the head typically self-corrects within the first six weeks of life.

Make an appointment with your child's pediatrician. Ask him to look at your child's head. If he does not acknowledge the asymmetry or minimizes its severity, consider asking for a second opinion. It is important to diagnose plagiocephaly early if you want treatment to be effective.

Complete all exercises your doctor recommends. Treatment starts with repositioning techniques, such as more tummy time, use of a boppy or u-ring behind the neck, repositioning during sleep and reduced time on back.

Watch your baby's head for improvement due to repositioning techniques. These techniques can be affective for a baby up to six months of age. If there has been no progress you'll need to talk to your pediatrician again and obtain a referral to a specialist.

Follow through with referrals to specialists. It may be recommended that you have your baby fit for a cranial molding device or helmet. Once you have the device, it is imperative that your baby wear the device as directed or treatment may not work.

If you have noticed that one side of your baby's head appears flat or that your baby's face does not look symmetrical, it may be plagiocephaly. Plagiocephaly is diagnosed when the head is malformed, exhibiting an oblique slant or a flat area on the back of the head. This condition results from external pressure applied to the skull.
