Cover a Baby to Sleep

Cover a Baby to Sleep - Consider swaddling a newborn in a receiving blanket. Swaddling can soothe a baby and help him sleep better. Spread a receiving blanket, fold one corner a little, and place the baby on his back with his head above the fold. Wrap the left corner of the blanket around the baby, going under the right arm, and tuck it behind his back. Bring the bottom corner up to the baby's chest, and then wrap the right corner around the baby. The neck and head should be exposed when you are finished, according to The Nemours Foundation.

Cover an older baby with a light blanket if one is needed. To do this safely, place the baby with his feet at the bottom of the crib, and tuck the blanket under the mattress on both sides and at the bottom. The blanket should reach no higher than the baby's chest, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Try an infant sleep sack. A sleep sack zips up and has a roomy, blanket-like bottom but fits like pajamas at the top.

It is important to keep safety in mind when you cover a baby for sleep. It is not safe to put a baby to sleep under thick or loose blankets, but he still needs to be kept warm and feeling secure at night. Cover your baby using safe methods that will keep him comfortable and protected. - by eHow
